THE BEAUTY EDIT · SHOPPING WITH INTENTION
Do I Actually Want This, or Is It Just on Sale?
A pretty palette and a good discount can make a convincing argument. Give yourself a moment before checkout.
You weren’t looking for another lipstick. Then you saw the sale.
Now you’re comparing shades, checking the free shipping minimum, and wondering whether you should add one more thing to make the order “worth it.”
There’s nothing wrong with enjoying makeup or buying something beautiful. But before you check out, it helps to separate what you want from what the offer is making you feel you need.
Was it on your list before the sale?
Maybe you’ve been waiting to replace a favorite product. Maybe there’s something you’ve wanted to try for a while, and you already set money aside for it. A discount can fit nicely into that plan.
If the product only caught your attention after you saw the price, pause and ask: “What do I like about this, besides the deal?”
You might still want it. Give yourself a reason that lasts longer than the countdown at checkout.
What do you already have?
Open the drawer. Look in the makeup bag you take everywhere. Check the palette you haven’t reached for in a while.
Do you already own a shade that gives you the look you’re imagining? Is this filling a gap, replacing something, or becoming another version of a product you rarely use?
Having similar products isn’t automatically a problem. The question is whether you’ll enjoy and use another one.
Does it fit how you actually get ready?
You can appreciate a beautiful collection without needing the whole thing at home.
If you wear makeup occasionally, think about what you reach for on those days. If your usual routine is quick, will this product make sense in that routine?
Picture the next few times you’ll get ready. Can you see yourself using it, or are you mostly enjoying the idea of owning it?
BEFORE YOU CHECK OUT
A quick check for your cart
- Would I still be interested without the sale sign?
- Do I already own something that does the same job?
- When am I likely to use this?
- Does the full total fit what I planned to spend?
- Would I be comfortable buying this if nobody else saw it?
Look at what you’ll pay today
Check the total after shipping, taxes, and any extras you added.
If you put another product in your cart to qualify for free shipping, compare both totals. Which option costs less, and do you actually want the extra item?
The amount coming out of your account is the number that needs to fit your plan. Take a moment with it before you decide.
You can leave it in the cart
If you’re unsure, close the page and come back later. Check what you already own. See whether you’re still interested after the excitement settles.
The offer may end. You may decide you’re comfortable letting it pass.
Or you may return, feel clear about the purchase, and buy something you’ll enjoy. That’s a decision you can make without rushing yourself.
Try this before your next beauty purchase
Choose one product you already own and use it the next time you get ready. Notice what you like about it and what, if anything, you wish it did differently.
That gives you something specific to look for when you shop, instead of starting with whatever happens to be marked down.
Enjoy your beauty routine. Let your purchases reflect the way you actually live, the things you love, and the money you’ve chosen to spend.
